James McGrath

Topic: Help Butterflies and Moths with Larval Food Plants

Biography: Jim McGrath, the founder of Nature Discovery, has a degree in Wildlife Biology from Michigan State University and has over 34 years of experience as an interpretive naturalist. He is a weekly specialist Michigan natural science teacher at Montessori Children's House in Lansing, Stepping Stones Montessori in East Lansing, and Okemos Nursery School in Okemos.

Jim McGrath always loved nature, ever since he was a little kid running around outdoors collecting insects. Witnessing his favorite places to explore being replaced and paved over made him passionate about trying to educate people about what they were missing out on thanks to industrial construction. “I was seeing environmental destruction. My favorite places to catch butterflies – suddenly, they’d be totally devastated for an apartment complex. By the time I was a teenager, I realized people didn’t know what they were destroying,” McGrath said. “I thought, ‘This is what I need to do with my life.’”

George Papadelis
Topic:  What's New for 2026?  Add wow to your gardens by adding something that is new and improved.

Picture
Biography: George Papadelis, horticulturist,  is a requested Fall into Spring repeat   performer.  His sense of humor shines as he light heartedly describes the newly arriving blooms.  His presentation will entice the audience to add something new and different to their gardens.  After all, what gardener isn’t always looking for some new wow for the garden?  George is the owner of Telly’s Greenhouse, Author, and Educator

His journey began when George Papadelis, a young entrepreneur, set up a small flower stand along John R. Road, selling plants he grew himself. While studying medicine at the University of Michigan, George returned each summer to nurture the business, which grew into a full-fledged seasonal greenhouse. In 1988, he made the pivotal decision to dedicate himself fully to Telly’s, choosing to cultivate plants and serve his community over a career in medicine.
